“Queen Sono”, the first African series of Netflix

The US platform  Netflix announced that its investments in Africa will grow over time.

A few months ago, Netflix unveiled its ambitions to conquer the African continent. The American streaming giant had also announced having acquired rights on some productions of Nollywood, the second film industry, including the musical “The wedding party”, or the thriller “October 1”.

On December 10th, it’s a South African actress who gave new Netflix ambitions. Pearl Thusi posted a video on Twitter to announce that the platform would produce its first African series entitled “Queen Sono”. The Heroine of this series, the South African thinks that the series will change the game for every artist on the African continent.

“Queen Sono”, chronicle of the torments of a secret agent, is a creation of the South African actor and director Kagiso Lediga. “Engaging talent like them to tell stories to the rest of the world place Pearl in the same category as the strong female characters that are Claire Underwood or Jessica Jones,” explained Erik Barmack, vice president of original Netflix programs at the international.

He also hinted that “Queen Sono” would be the first of a long list of African creations. “Over time, our roots will become deeper in Africa and South Africa, and we are moving very quickly on this topic right now, with the intention of investing more in local content,” said Erik Barmack.
